DAY 1 READING
January 1âJanuary 4 (pages 1â17)
January 1âJanuary 4 (pages 1â17)
This morning, youâll begin with Godâs incredible creation of the universe, humankind, and everything in between.
Take your time reading. Go slowly. Thereâs no rush. Re-read sections if necessary. If you read something helpful, underline it, highlight it, write questions in the margins, and/or take notes. Just read. You wonât be tested. Donât use this time or resource to âstudyâ Godâs Word; use the time to read His story for enjoyment and knowledge.
After finishing todayâs reading, take a few minutes to consider what you read. Use these questions to assist you through processing your devotional time with God this morning.
- What is taking place so far in Godâs story? Who are the main characters?
- What have you learned about God so far? Whatâs He like? What characteristics does He hold? Who is God so far in the story?
- What did you learn about humanity? What did you learn about humankindâs origin? Does this help you understand yourself better?
- What was one new thing you learned this morning from your reading?
DAY 2 READING
January 5âJanuary 8 (pages 17â31)
Well done! Youâve made it to day 2 of discovering Godâs story. How are you enjoying it so far? In just one day, youâve already read about Godâs creation, manâs fall, and the flood, and you were introduced to Abraham (Abram). Today, youâll start on page 17 with January 5âs reading. There couldnât be a better place to start: The Lordâs Covenant with Abraham.
Become immersed this morning as you read a very important and foundational part of Godâs story. Oh, and youâll also get to read about circumcision, which is always awkward and fun.
Sit in this next portion of Godâs story. Put yourself in the story as you see fit. Get involved. Donât rush your time. Re-read when needed, sit with the areas hitting you, and deliberate through what youâre experiencing and learning.
As you come to the end of todayâs reading on page 31 (January 8), take time to debrief with yourself what you just encountered. Use these questions to get your mind processing and assessing what you just took in.
- What took place in Godâs story today? What is God up to? What questions do you have for God?
- Who is Abraham (Abram)? What is his role in Godâs story?
- What are you learning about humanity? Has the human heart, character, or struggles changed since creation?
- Was any portion of todayâs story new for you? If so, what was new?
DAY 3 READING
January 9âJanuary 12 (pages 31â46)
Have you ever been stolen from? Itâs disturbing and feels yucky in a variety of ways. Iâll never forget coming home when I was a teenager to a house that had been completely ransacked by a burglar. Beds were overturned, items were broken and scattered, and all objects of value were taken. It was disturbing.
Today, Godâs story picks up with a brother stealing something of tremendous value from his brother. It was deceptive, evil, and well thought out. Itâll be an entertaining read as you uncover the story of two brothersâ relationships with each other, God, and their families.
Interact with the story today. Remember that your time with God is not a test, a homework assignment, or a project. This devotional is simply for you to set aside time to enter into Godâs Word and use His story to teach you about your heavenly Father, humanity, and how to live the good life.
Take time after you read to think through all you took in. Use these questions to get started on your thoughts and responses to whatâs taking place.
- What took place today in Godâs story? Who are the main characters? Have these changed since day one? Have any new characters emerged?
- What are you learning about God? What was He like in todayâs reading? What characteristics did He hold?
- What are you learning about humanity? What did you learn about family relationships?
