DAY 1 READING
January 1–January 4 (pages 1–17)
This morning, you’ll begin with God’s incredible creation of the universe, humankind, and everything in between.
Take your time reading. Go slowly. There’s no rush. Re-read sections if necessary. If you read something helpful, underline it, highlight it, write questions in the margins, and/or take notes. Just read. You won’t be tested. Don’t use this time or resource to “study” God’s Word; use the time to read His story for enjoyment and knowledge.
After finishing today’s reading, take a few minutes to consider what you read. Use these questions to assist you through processing your devotional time with God this morning.
  1. What is taking place so far in God’s story? Who are the main characters?
  2. What have you learned about God so far? What’s He like? What characteristics does He hold? Who is God so far in the story?
  3. What did you learn about humanity? What did you learn about humankind’s origin? Does this help you understand yourself better?
  4. What was one new thing you learned this morning from your reading?

DAY 2 READING
January 5–January 8 (pages 17–31)
Well done! You’ve made it to day 2 of discovering God’s story. How are you enjoying it so far? In just one day, you’ve already read about God’s creation, man’s fall, and the flood, and you were introduced to Abraham (Abram). Today, you’ll start on page 17 with January 5’s reading. There couldn’t be a better place to start: The Lord’s Covenant with Abraham.
Become immersed this morning as you read a very important and foundational part of God’s story. Oh, and you’ll also get to read about circumcision, which is always awkward and fun.
Sit in this next portion of God’s story. Put yourself in the story as you see fit. Get involved. Don’t rush your time. Re-read when needed, sit with the areas hitting you, and deliberate through what you’re experiencing and learning.
As you come to the end of today’s reading on page 31 (January 8), take time to debrief with yourself what you just encountered. Use these questions to get your mind processing and assessing what you just took in.
  1. What took place in God’s story today? What is God up to? What questions do you have for God?
  2. Who is Abraham (Abram)? What is his role in God’s story?
  3. What are you learning about humanity? Has the human heart, character, or struggles changed since creation?
  4. Was any portion of today’s story new for you? If so, what was new?

DAY 3 READING
January 9–January 12 (pages 31–46)
Have you ever been stolen from? It’s disturbing and feels yucky in a variety of ways. I’ll never forget coming home when I was a teenager to a house that had been completely ransacked by a burglar. Beds were overturned, items were broken and scattered, and all objects of value were taken. It was disturbing.
Today, God’s story picks up with a brother stealing something of tremendous value from his brother. It was deceptive, evil, and well thought out. It’ll be an entertaining read as you uncover the story of two brothers’ relationships with each other, God, and their families.
Interact with the story today. Remember that your time with God is not a test, a homework assignment, or a project. This devotional is simply for you to set aside time to enter into God’s Word and use His story to teach you about your heavenly Father, humanity, and how to live the good life.
Take time after you read to think through all you took in. Use these questions to get started on your thoughts and responses to what’s taking place.
  1. What took place today in God’s story? Who are the main characters? Have these changed since day one? Have any new characters emerged?
  2. What are you learning about God? What was He like in today’s reading? What characteristics did He hold?
  3. What are you learning about humanity? What did you learn about family relationships?
